Ariadne's Thread

Recently I made an observation; an observation that will change the complexion of life as we know it. Why don't we stop judging, telling and complaining about what others do with their lives. It is their lives, so let them drink, smoke, pollute and corrupt this earth, and let's just sit back and watch. Sure, every day I see ads on T.V. spewing truth about AIDS, spewing facts about pregnacy, condoms and hallucinagenic drugs, but are we listening? Are the people out there who need to hear these even have their ears tuned in? I am afraid not. So, why don't we just let them be. I mean, if they want to destroy themselves, and a part of this earth, let them. Some people in our society have been spending too much time worrying about what other people are doing and not enought time examining their lives. A mirror is easy to hold for another, but can we hold it to our faces in the same vein? Self examination is what it is all about and we are spending too much time looking at someone else's image in the proverbial mirror of life. Pessimissm? Okay, so I sound pessimistic with my 'live and let live' attitude, but what else can I do? The world tries to educate people about the importance of recycling, but then why do I see our campus littered with aluminum cans? Cancer victims speak about the deleterious effects of smoking, but why do I see hordes of students gathered around the entrances of the various buildings lighting up before class? Alcoholics have tried to enlighten us about the adversity of booze, but why are our school days imbued with liquor? You get my point. People will only listen when it suits them. Suits them, not you or me. We think if society pounds hard enough the warnings will get ingrained in the heads of the masses. Wrong. I think all these danger signs posted everywhere you go is only excerbating the problem, not assuaging it. Maybe through all our efforts, are "alcoholic drug free recylce while you can awarness weeks" are only making things worse. Legalize drugs, let people suffer in their own stench. The masses have destroyed themselves before, and they will do it again. I say let them do it quickly so I can get on with my life. I want to live peacefully, without beer commercials with naked women, I want to live deliberatley without stereotypes and hate, I want to live bucolically without machines making me feel inhuman. Where can a man, or woman, find this kind of tranquility? Where, in a world which won't listen and a people who don't have sight. Culture, as we know it, is following the second law of thermodynamics; it is becoming more disorded, moving toward chaos. Those of us who think we can prevent it, stage "awarness weeks" and petition for condoms in school, but people oppose, and impede our progress saying this will only cause more chaos. To quote from Nietzsche, "Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster," and monsters is what we have become. Each of has our own idea of what is right, and what is wrong. To me, this means that there is no one singly truth, but millions of individual truths. We seek truth externally, never finding it, when it was always inside. No one person told you how you should live your life, you took it from many different people; became an amalgamation of all those you met. From this notion, how can we go on believing that we can reverse the winds that spawn the disarray of life. People will find their own truth, no matter how much bickering and pandering you put into their lives. Albeit you might be able to cause someone to think by informing them about the present dangers, but we cannot save everyone from the disorder which ensues. Those who will listen, learn, be enlightened will follow on their own voliton, let them come when they are ready; do not force them into doing something before they are fit. My plead to you is to give up on those who seem disinterested, give up on those who do not care. Focus on the self, and from this healing, the healing of the whole will not be far behind. |
